Podcast and Vodcast News 10 - That Podcasting Thing

.
There May Be Something to That Podcasting Thing
.

From the advertiser perspective, podcasting presents some major reach opportunities -- for example, buying ads at radio prices, or even lower, that can be heard around the globe -- and some truly impressive metrics challenges. Chief among the latter are how to buy and place the ads themselves, and how to determine what kind and size audience you're buying, and whether they even heard your ad.

Those with a scholarly bent probably realized that podcasting was big-time in December, when the New Oxford American Dictionary named "podcast" as the 2005 Word of the Year.

Podcast and Vodcast News 8 - Podcast to Paidcast

.
From Podcast to Paidcast
.

Until recently, most podcasts have generated revenue through advertising or drawing traffic to their web sites. A few networks such as The Podcast Network have formed as centralized commercial organizations, but so far, sponsorships have been their only source of income.

This week marked a major milestone in the young and fast growing medium of podcasts- two popular podcasts are experimenting with two very different payment models and a third one is turning the world of film distribution on its head.

Podcast and Vodcast News 5 - Podcasting Trend

.
Podcast and Vodcast News - Podcasting Trends
.

Podcasting has all the ingredients to become a major technology trend. Podcasting has started with little fanfare but has the potential to become a giant wave due to a number of factors going for it. The word Podcast might have been roughly derived from iPod and broadcast (it sure sounds like that to me so don’t hit me if I am wrong! ).

The process works pretty much like radio except that the broadcast is done via mobile devices and the power of content delivery via the internet. This new form of broadcasting of information opens up tremendous opportunities for dispersion of information, entertainment and news.

Podcast and Vodcast News 3 - Java Podcasters

.
The Java Podcasters, Part 1

by Chris Adamson

Listen and you'll hear the voices of Java: talking about success stories and embarrassing failures, great innovations and over-engineered monstrosities. This could easily describe the realm of Java blogging, but now it applies to the audio space as well. In the last year, a number of Java-related podcasts have sprung up across the Web. The Java podcasters employ a variety of formats--one guy's opinions, group conversations, interviews with prominent developers and authors--to say nothing of sub-topics, rants, reactions, and audible musings.

All you need to listen to a podcast is an MP3 player--iPods are nice, but your PC will do just fine--and the RSS feeds to get the new shows to you. In this article, we're highlighting five interesting Java-related podcasts with brief interviews of the podcasters. As you'll see, the field has already diversified, so tune in to discover something that might just catch your ear.

This week, we talk with the voices of two of the best-known Java podcasts: The Java Posse and Swampcast. Next week, we'll continue with three more Java podcasts you might not know about, but should.

Podcast and Vodcast News 2 - Cell TV

I Want My Cell TV

By Mike Hogan - February 2006

When Steve Jobs unveiled Apple's video iPod, the biggest names in media moguldom started scrambling to get their shows on the tiny screen. A half-million cell phone owners were already tuned in to MobiTVand Verizon Wireless' VCast. But Jobs' announcement catapulted video podcasting into prime time.

Within weeks of the debut, Apple iTunes had sold a million episodes of popular TV shows at two bucks a throw. Suddenly, it's hip to watch TV on a 2- to 3-inch display. Better yet, video podcasting--or vodcasting--is a marketing medium any entrepreneur can afford.

Vodcasts can be made with any videocam or even some cell phones and can be shared through a growing list of free or low-cost distributors. For example, the nonprofit Open Media Network offers free distribution, while MPEG Nation charges just $5 to host a video for six months. Sites like FilmLoop and Pic2Vid let you build a video using digital pictures and a voice-over. You have to use their players for clip creation and digital rights management, but videos are easily reproduced for different communities.

Web-savvy ad agencies like Los Angeles-based IndieClick can help produce your videos and find the right audience. A video marketing campaign might not only be low-budget--it might even be self-supporting, says IndieClick President Heather Luttrell. Distributors like Revver have ways to track viewers and will share the revenue from ads that get displayed at the end of clips or as small, transparent overlays.

"We might start by spending $1,000 this month on three different podcasting initiatives and generate $1,100 in revenue," explains Luttrell. "We see what works and then target the highest revenue-generating venues."
Who's watching? Basically, your kids and millions of other cell phone-packing young folk already dialed into text messaging, blogging, online gaming and, of course, MTV. You need a message that plays in those venues.

If you have one, it can really work for you: One recent IndieClick vodcast garnered 1 million downloads.
Youth market not on your radar? Don't worry, says Luttrell: Distribution networks and audiences will broaden to other demographics over time.

Podcast and Vodcast News 1 - SFS TV and iTunes

Story courtesy of http://www.ipodnn.com/articles/06/01/24/sfs.tv.vodcasts/

SFS TV vodcasts with iTunes

January 24th, 2006

The Student Filmmakers Showcase (SFS TV) is a new series that will be devoted to showcasing student short films from around the globe. Officially set to begin “vodcasting” January 30th, the vodcasts will be made exclusively available for Apple's iTunes and video iPods.

Along with the show’s official launch, its website will also be available in Spanish and French to accommodate filmmakers around the globe.

On top of being a student film showcase, SFS TV is also an internship where university students collaborate with the show’s producers to be part of the creative process. Each student has the opportunity to write, direct, edit, shoot, and more in order to gain critical experience for the future. While production is based in Austin, Texas, the show incorporates mentors who live and work in Los Angeles, New York, and France. SFS TV is an educational and non-profit program designed to accommodate student works that feature copyrighted music and media.

SFS TV joins the legions of podcasters and vodcasters all around the world, as well as other educational entities now signing up with iTunes to enhance students' educational experience and opportunities. “I believe in the medium and the format more so than other portable devices on the market today. What Apple has done, in my opinion, is to reinvent the television. They created the product, and now it is up to producers to create the content,” says Executive Producer and creator Juan Garcia.
